Liturgy: The Good News—Jan. 21
A Eucharist which does not pass over into the concrete practice of love is intrinsically fragmented. “”Pope Benedict XVI
Theological Question
What is the relationship between good liturgy and social justice?
Goal
Students will learn how to judge the authenticity of worship based on the biblical principles of justice.
Content
Students will explore the proper relationship of jusitce before worship; they will explore why justice is primary and yet insufficient without worship. They will discern the difference between secular justice and Christian or biblical justice. They will answer for themselves what difference Christianity makes in the struggle for justice.
Homework (to prepare for Jan. 28)
Read the following scenario:
You are all members of a parish whose pastor has suddenly died. The bishop has appointed a part-time Director of Parish Life to run the parish for at least the next six months. Your parish has never had a liturgy committee and the new director has invited all of you to gather on January 28 to discuss starting a liturgy committee. The director has delegated full responsibility to you and will not be at the meeting.
Think about and possibly act on the following questions:
- What do you need to learn about your parish before January 28?
- What resources do you need to gather before January 28?
- What do you need to learn before January 28 and how will you learn it?
- Will you need to have any conversations with any of the other committee members before January 28? About what? How and when?
